35th Annual Goodwill
 International Karate Championships
Sunday February 26th 2006

Registration for the 35th International Goodwill Karate Championships opened at 9:00am the lines moved very quickly but still went around the building.   The mass of competitors and the huge crowd managed to get into their seats in time to see the masterful demonstrations.  The first one was the Chanbara group led by Dana Abbott assisted by Tim vanDenover.  They demonstrated techniques and executed a fast paced Kobudo Kumite that was something to see.  Next were applications brilliantly demonstrated by Thanh Nguyen and Kevin Suzuki.  Followed by the 2 teams from the JKO demonstrating 5 man team kata.  Many viewers in the audience had not seen 5 man team kata before and were very interested.  The finale was Thanh Nguyen performing lightning fast Furi Kama.  At 9:55 the group “Good Company” (Kelly Eyre, Irene Stockton, Mimi Hochkiss, Denise Parleman, Cheryl Chapman, Richard Hatakeyama, John Gritz) sang a beautiful rendition of the USA National Anthem and the tournament officially started.  While everyone was getting ready Sensei’s “Special Guests” were introduced including Sensei Sawabe (Honorary Chairman of Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Genbu-Kai) Pat Johnson, Richard Robago, Gene LaBell, Frank Smith, Chuck Merriman, Tak Kubota, Issac Florantine, Amil Farkas, Ken Nishiki and others.  The Nissei Week Queen and Princesses were also there and presented some of the awards during the tournament.  Even with the well run, fast pace of this tournament, it still turned out to be a very full day of Karate with Kata and Kumite events continuing all through the afternoon and into the evening..  After the event was completed many of the Genbu-Kai Family went to (jam packed) the local Shakey's Pizza where the festivities continued...

Mochitsuki 2006
Friday February 24th 2006

The event was very well attended by Genbu-Kai students assembled from far and wide for this weeks karate events.  Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to participate at the Santa Ana dojo Mochitsuki festivities.

Mochitsuki, is a Japanese custom fundamental to the Japanese culture. Mochitsuki means, making Mochi (sweet rice cakes.) Most secular Japanese and almost all Japanese religious groups, (Buddhist, Shinto and even some Christian) have a rice cake making event near the end of the year. Many Japanese schedule their Mochitsuki events at the third day before the New Year. Mochitsuki is a community event, allowing young and old to socialize together, and have fun in a community project. In Modern Japan most people consider Mochitsuki, an ethnic secular custom without a specific religious significance.

FOLKLORE

Mochi, In Japanese meaning, "Full Moon". It is believed that "the ardent observer will perceive that on the moon there lives a hare, who is constantly preparing Mochi."

Kangeiko 2006

Sunday January 8th 2006

Nearly a hundred Genbu-Kai students arrived at Huntington Beach, California USA to join Sensei Demura for the annual Kangeiko (Cold Weather Training).  People began arriving at 5:30am.  The fires were lit and everyone gathered around them and socialized until it was time to begin.  It was foggy near the beach making driving more difficult for some, made everything get “all wet” and prevented the taking of flash pictures.   The fog also prevented us from seeing a beautiful sunrise.  Instead it just got “Light” out.  The fog provided one unexpected benefit for everyone.  The low cloud kept the available heat from escaping and this years Kangeiko event was the warmest in everyone’s memory.

The students started with a run down the beach and back before sunup.  Then everyone formed a large circle for basics.  Later everyone performed katas and various drills.  The time passed very quickly and concluded with Seisan facing the ocean.  The event was beneficial, FUN and attracted a lot of attention from “Passers-by” that stopped and watched.   Following tradition, the Costa Mesa dojo performed kata in the surf (1 kata for each student) while the other students were changing into dry clothes.  After the event, everyone happily gathered around the fires with HOT drinks and socialized some more.   Kangeiko is a great way to start the New Year!
